F45

Training Studio | Main Floor | Room 118

The "F" stands for Functional Training. The "45" stands for the total time of all classes, 45 minutes.
The concept is simple: Our studio offers 45-minute high-intensity, circuit training workout classes for all members. Every day throughout the week offers a different 45-minute workout. The workouts are created by the F45 Athletics and Peak Performance Department from a database of over 3,000 different exercises, so members never get the same workout twice.

About F45

Functional Training

Functional training is the engagement in exercises that mimic or recreate everyday movement. These types of exercises typically involve the use of your full body and multiple muscle groups. This style of training builds and sculpts lean, functional muscle – lifting, squatting, jumping, twisting, pulling, pushing, punching, kicking, rowing, biking – all of these movements qualify as “functional" and all can be found at F45 Training.

Workout Is Never The Same

The fixed, 45-minute duration of each workout exists to provide a timing structure to maximize members’ growth and progress. Daily workouts vary the amount of exercise stations, the work time/rest time ratio and the number of repetitions through the “Exercise Circuit” of each day. This provides a challenging workout that is always evolving and never the same.

Industry Leading Tech

Workouts are fueled and organized by the robust technology systems featured in our F45 studio. A series of TV’s mounted on the front wall of the studio provides an organized, station-by-station diagram for each daily workout. With the guidance and motivation of the F45 Trainers, this system is a visual tool for members to progress from station to station throughout the workout.

Building a Community

The employment of F45 Functional Training, Circuit workouts in a Team Training atmosphere is the final factor fueling F45 Training’s dynamism. The motivation and encouragement in a Group Training facility create a pulsing, upbeat environment where goals are met and exceeded.

Five questions with the Director

What’s F45?

The rumors are true: something new is coming to the Student Recreation Center at WVU! Soon, members will be able to take part in functional fitness classes as part of the F45 program. Here, Andy Darling, the Director of Campus Recreation at West Virginia University, shares some background about the project to add this unique class format to the fitness offerings:

Tell us what “functional fitness” means and what the F45 program is.

F45 stands for "functional 45," and offers a functional training workout in 45 minutes. Functional training mimics everyday movement, engaging multiple muscle groups and conditioning the total body in a single workout. It utilizes lifting, squatting, jumping, twisting, pulling, pushing, punching, kicking, rowing and cycling to burn fat and build lean muscle. F45 packs a highly effective functional training session into a 45-minute class, and with routines created from a database of more than 3,000 different exercises, participants never get the same workout twice.

How did you decide to add this program?

It’s really in response to the feedback from our users. We conduct satisfaction surveys on a biannual basis. In our last survey in Spring of 2017, two of the questions posed to users were: “If more capacity could be added, what areas would you desire most?” and “What areas of the facility do you use least?” In the first question, users indicated that the areas that they desired more of were functional fitness, weight and fitness areas, and group exercise. The area that scored the least response was net and racquet sports. In the second question, users indicated that the areas they used the least were squash courts, racquetball courts, badminton courts. So from an intent standpoint, we know that users favor more space for fitness pursuits and find less utility in racquet and net sports. This aligns directly with the past few years of industry-wide trends.

So do you think that reallocating court space will serve more users?

Yes we do. We’ll be conducting the fitness classes in what previously was one of the three racquetball courts. In addition to the survey data, our supervisors perform hourly counts of each area in the facility. At peak usage, we can see a significantly higher density in our Weight and Fitness areas vs. our racquetball and squash courts by a factor of 5 to 1. Realigning one of the courts to address our greatest needs appears to be the most prudent action with the only downside being that we can no longer support three simultaneous racquetball games.

Is there an extra cost to take the classes?

No, the classes are included with membership so they’re free for students and other members. We will have a limited number of spots available for non-members which will require an additional fee. Revenue from those participants will help to subsidize the program cost and allow us to offer it without cost to students and other members.

When can we try the classes out?

The installation has already started and will be completed in the next week or so. Training of our fitness instructors will follow that will lead to a roll out right around the end of January. This will also be one of the first classes requiring prior registration. Given the popularity at other facilities and the limited space, we’ll be using our Member Portal to handle registration. We’ll be rolling out more details on that process here in the next week or so.
