New Year, New Game, Same Goal

A new sport, some changes to make work easier and the same student-focused outlook; WVU’s intramural sports is making sound moves in 2020. Intramural Sports, New years resolutions, Goals, WVU, Campus Rec

Low-commitment, fun and getting active are some of the things West Virginia University’s Intramural Sports strives to achieve in making something students want and enjoy.

While keeping the same objectives of making the experience as enjoyable as possible for students, campus Intramural Sports has expanded and formed a new competitive sport called Wallyball.

Wallyball is a mixture of racquetball and volleyball. It is played like volleyball but in a racquetball room and allows players to bounce the ball off the walls.

In creating new teams to join at low costs, Intramural Sports play a crucial role for students getting to know each other and in breaking up the monotony of school work.

Larry Cook, program assistant for Intramural Sports, has been working for and participating in Intramural Sports for two years. Cook credits the structure of Intramural Sports for helping him branch out in college and make friends.

“It brought the organized sport aspect of life into my college life that I decided to leave in high school,” said Cook. “That really allowed me to express myself and meet new people and find a new group of friends.”

Cook also says the environment of Intramural Sports attracts a lot of people who would not usually participate in organized sports.

“It allows people that maybe weren’t comfortable enough to play sports in high school to come out with a group of their friends that they made and have fun,” said Cook.

Sports are not the only roles students can fulfill either. Intramural Sports has many roles to fill and are currently looking for officials to call games. Working for Intramural Sports is the same low-commitment and laid back environment that the sports share and offer a part-time job at night for students.

Single game passes, used for one-time participants to try out different sports or to play when needed for a team, are sold alongside all access passes giving students affordable opportunities to try different sports or play competitively with friends.

Intramural Sports are very flexible allowing students to put in as much work as they want as practices are not mandatory unless the team schedules one. Teams play games once or twice a week.

WVU’s Intramural Sports outlook for the new year is to still fulfill their role and purpose of giving students an opportunity to try something new, enjoy an activity, meet new people and work entirely for each student’s needs.

Intramural Sports is still holding admissions for teams and participants through February.
