It’s almost fall, and here in West Virginia there is no season more beautiful. The trees paint themselves in lavish orange, yellow and red. Miles upon miles, the colors can be seen, dotted on the mountains. Yet, this also means that the warmer days are coming to an end for the year. So, if you’re looking for a way to spend your fall days out in the picturesque Appalachian hills, grab a blanket and some snacks and plan out a picnic. Bring yourself or come with friends, it doesn’t matter. Nature is for all to appreciate. Here is a list of three places not too far from Morgantown that are great to sit down for a spell and have a peaceful picnic.
1. Mason-Dixon Historical Park
This park sits on the West Virginia and Pennsylvania border. It has various trails to wander, plus a Fairy Door Trail (one of my favorites). Once you travel close to the entrance of the Fairy Door Trail there is the calm river that flows by the edge, surrounded by fields and trees. It exudes the perfect “ cottagecore” atmosphere, which is perfect for picnicking, journaling, reading, studying or just taking Instagram photos Yet, the most fun part of the experience is to wander around and look for it. The satisfaction of finding it will make your day.

For those in and around Morgantown, the expansive view at Coopers Rock is an iconic
favorite among locals and students alike. Yet, there is more to the State Park
than the overlook of the glorious mountains. Once in the park, close to the trail
entrances and parking lots, there lies a perfect spot for a picnic. Not too far
away from the lot, there are shady, huge rocks. Below them are folks walking
through the trails. Yet, the rocks are spacious and cool, with room to find the
perfect spot to set up the picnic. This spot is perfect for those who have just
finished hiking and are ready to unwind for a bit before driving back home.
3. White Park
Historic White Park is known for its waterfall, and what better place to set up a picnic? On your way to stepping down into the falls, there are trees surrounding the area perfect to hang a hammock and relax the day away. With the rustling sound of the water and leaves from the trees canopying over, this is another perfect spot for a picnic. The inviting murmur of the water is sure to take some stress off your shoulders.
