Take fishing to the next level at the beach.

Fishing is a sport that is fun no matter your skill level. It is also versatile in that there are so many places you can try it! Whether it is a pond, creek, river, or lake, there are so many places to try casting in a line, especially in West Virginia. However, if you are planning a beach vacation anytime soon, consider surf fishing! This is a fun, relaxing and undoubtedly beautiful experience open to all those interested in fishing.

For many beach goers, a day at the beach is a day to sit back and enjoy the view. Why not make it more exciting by having a line in the water, where you can wait for that tell-tale bend or jerk of the pole? Those with a specific experience in mind may try surf fishing at specific times of the day, like morning or evening, but if you are just wanting to try your luck, it does not matter what time of day you choose to cast out.

For regular surf fishing, all of your fishing gear will likely grow in size. You need a heavy duty pole, one designed for the specific purpose of casting into the ocean, as well as heavier weights and line. You will also need bigger hooks, and a fishing rod to shove deep into the sand to hold your pole as you sit back, relax and wait for a fish to take your bait. Speaking of bait, some common frozen baits used for surf fishing are shrimp, squid and mullet, which can make for a messy (and smelly) experience of baiting your hook. The payoff can be worth it, however.

Depending what waters you are fishing as well as the season, what takes your bait can be pretty diverse. Fishing in the summer in North Carolina, some common species I have caught include shark, Atlantic croaker and pinfish. Fishing in the Gulf may bring you more diversity in your catches, with some common species being striped bass, snook, redfish, flounder, sea trout and so much more ( Surf Fishing). Catch of the day

While you may need to buy or rent some new gear, surf fishing is an experience everyone should try on their next beach vacation. Just make sure to buy the proper license depending on the area and the time you will be there, and be ready for an adventure you will not forget!
