WVU Club Gymnastics Third at Nationals

Nationals

After only three years as a club sports team, WVU’s Club Gymnastics team placed 3rd at the National Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. Two team members placed individually in bars, floor and vault.

The National Championship took place at the Fort Worth Convention Center from April 11-15. Eight members of the ten-person WVU Club Gymnastics team traveled to Fort Worth to compete against 17 other teams in the level 6 division.

During a competition, individual gymnastics are judged out of ten points. Judges will deduct points based on any falls, bent legs and flexed feet, among other criteria. Teams are ranked based on the top 3 scores of each event. WVU finished with a 105.925 behind the University of California in first place and Brandeis University in second place.

The WVU gymnastics team has put a significant amount of time and effort into preparing for this season. The club gymnastics team practices four times each week — two days in a gymnastics training center and two days in a weight lifting room. The season starts in early November and ends in April; the team has traveled to other locations to compete such as Ohio State University in February.

As the president of the WVU gymnastics club, Jordan Masaitis said:

“As President, I am so thrilled with everyone’s hard work throughout the season. I’m so glad to have a bond with such amazing girls. In my future year as President, I wish to lead the team to nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida.”

Madeline Snyder and Rebecca (Becky) Milburn both placed individually during the National National Championship.

Snyder is the national bar champion with a score of 9.15. She competed against 93 other participants on bars. She is a freshman at WVU and has been a gymnastic since she was 8 years old. Her home gym is Aerial Port Gymnastics in Fairmont.

Milburn placed 5th on floor with a 9.625 and 5th on vault with a 9.3. There were over 100 participants in both of these events. Before coming to WVU, Becky trained at Hurricane Gymnastics in Chesepeake, VA.
