WVU Campus Recreation ramped up it’s industry involvement with a strong showing at the 2018 NIRSA Conference, held earlier this month in Denver, Colorado. In addition to sending four full-time staff and two graduate assistants to attend the conference, WVU presented on leadership, claimed two national awards and had one if its own elected to the position of NIRSA Region II Representative.
Andy Darling, the WVU Campus Recreation Director, was selected to deliver a presentation on leadership. In his presentation, “Leaders Eat Last,” he spoke about the intersection of leadership and management, and discussed why certain ways of thinking as an organizational leader matter. He also developed the notion that successful leaders are those who focus on their people’s best interests.
Two representatives from the WVU Campus Recreation team won NIRSA Creative Excellence Awards: Matthew Shreve, the Marketing and Communications Manager for WVU Campus Recreation and Adventure WV, was awarded first place in the Programming Publication category for his “First-Year Trips” brochure. Nick Jarvis, a recent multi-disciplinary media and arts graduate, was awarded second place in the Student Publication category for his “Climbing Wall Brochure.” Creative Excellence Awards are awarded to individuals in nine categories: Comprehensive Brochure and Facility Publication, Integrated Marketing Campaign, Social Media, Programming Publication, Large Scale Signage, Audiovisual Promotion, Website, Student Publication, and Student Digital Presentation.

Of notable significance, a member of WVU’s Campus Recreation team, Craig Decker, was elected to a leadership role in the largest NIRSA region, despite being from the least populous state in the region. Decker, WVU Campus Recreation’s Associate Director, was elected to operate as the NIRSA Region II Representative for a 2 year term. NIRSA has seven regions in the U.S. and Canada, with Region II extending from West Virginia to Florida.
