Meet the Staff: Junior Armooh, Youth Programming GA

Kwaku Armooh knew he found a new home in West Virginia when he took his first trip along our Country Roads.

Driving to WVU from his hometown in Maryland, Armooh quickly fell in love with the community, the area, the environment, the beauty he saw in the landscape and the overall setting of the state.

“I’m a huge environmental person, scenery really gets me.” - Kwaku Armooh

Through the state's beauty and the people he’s met, he knew he had a future here.

Soon after arriving at WVU, Armooh was encouraged by a friend to check out the Rec Center. As a Sports and Exercise Psychology major, he fit right in and soon found a great place to have fun, meet new people and play sports. He started working as an operations supervisor in 2018 and later as a youth programming assistant.

He is now pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Management and works as the Youth Programming Graduate Assistant, overseen by Vicki Hoover. In this role, he is responsible for planning and coordinating activities and programming for kids, such as Kids Night Out and Kids Climbing Club.

One of his favorite events at Campus Rec, however, is the annual welcome back for students before the fall semester. He thinks that participating, or simply just being at Campus Kickoff at the beginning of each academic year really helps people prepare for college.

“It starts to get everyone together for the fresh year,” he said.

Armooh believes that incoming freshmen — or anyone, for that matter — who want to participate in Campus Rec should come in and talk to someone who works there with similar interests, so that they can find a community to be a part of. Jobs are almost always available and activities are always provided, so joining the Rec Center community is very easy and, of course, fun.

While unsure about what his career may be, Armooh sees himself succeeding in the future.

“I see myself making a huge impact on the sports marketing world and the world of sports in general,” he said.

Being a huge fan of Lebron James, Usain Bolt, Serena WiIliams and Cam Newton, Armooh has had a strong base for his work and sports ethics.

“I [like] highlight athletes,” he said. “Throughout the years, I have taken note of their game.”

In addition to looking up to those athletes, Armooh also plays a wide variety of sports and athletics, including basketball, football, gymnastics and ice skating.

In his free time, Armooh enjoys watching Netflix, listening to music and using the many resources available at the Rec Center. He also really likes the art of cooking, which not only results in a nice meal but calms him down and lets him have some fun with food.
