We get it– going to the gym for the first time can be intimidating. We can help!

Without a clear plan of what to do in the gym, many people will wander around not accomplishing much. You can beat the gym-timidation and go into any facility with confidence by having an idea of what you’ll do that day and the layout of the gym.

The Student Recreation Center at WVU is three floors, which can be overwhelming when you first walk in. On the entry level is the upper fitness weight room which has strength training machines and cardio equipment. This level is where you’ll find rooms for various racquet sports, F45, open courts, a yoga and cycling studio. Going up a floor will take you to the elevated track that overlooks the lower courts. Heading to the bottom floor, you’ll find the lower fitness weight room, lower basketball and volleyball courts, climbing wall, cardio equipment and the pool– which features a lap pool, leisure pool, and spa.

Having an idea of what type of workout you’ll be doing that day will assist in deciding where in the gym to go. The lower weight room has multiple squat and bench racks for doing unassisted squats, bench and deadlifts. Starting out, it is a good idea to have some help when performing these exercises to ensure proper form. Squats and Deadlifts both are a great way to work your legs and supporting muscles. The lower fitness room also has equipment for all areas of the body, including machines to target specific muscles. The upper weight room is more focused on machines, but also has dumbbells. Both rooms have about the same machines, however; the lower room has more free weight equipment. The track on the top floor is great for going long distances, as there are 3 lanes and great views of the Rec. Make sure to read the sign at the top of the stairs, as it will let you know the direction of movement and the distance for mileage.

Going in with a plan of action will help you have a more productive overall workout. There are great tools online to help build a workout plan before even stepping foot into the gym! Many gyms will keep machines for muscle groups near each other, so it is easy to find what you’re looking for.
