Job Description

Within the Department of Campus Recreation, Graduate Assistants collaborate with Campus Recreation staff to continue to serve the community as mentioned in our mission statement. Graduate Assistants serve on assigned Campus Recreation and University work teams or committees as needed, including provided evening and weekend operational support and event coordination when necessary. Graduate Assistants produce required information for monthly and annual reports while also submitting marketing requests within established timelines, policies and procedures.

Along with other duties as assigned, Graduate Assistants attend and participate in University, divisional and department events, programs and training. Graduate Assistants provide instruction and development opportunities for staff through training, coaching and performance evaluations that incorporate student learning outcomes. Specific outcomes include critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, quality customer service, conflict resolution, initiative, communication, innovation and other transferable skills related to the department work-integrated learning program.

Position Overview

Title:  Youth Programs and Craft  Graduate Assistant
Department: Campus Recreation - Student Life
Reports to: Youth Program Coordinator
Stipend: 9 month contract for Fall/Spring Semesters - $15,000. Summer hourly employment available at $19.00/hour. 
Desired Start Date: June 2024, Stipend to begin August 2024
Graduate Assistants are required to work the full summer between the first and second year of their Assistantship. During the summer months, GA’s are paid hourly at a rate of $19/hr with the ability to work up to 40 hours a week. During this time GA’s may be required to work outside of their program area based on departmental needs.  

Campus Recreation Professional Duties

  • Collaborate with Campus Recreation staff to help department make the impact mentioned in our mission and vision statements
  • Serves on assigned Campus Recreation and university work teams or committees as needed
  • Provide evening and weekend operational support and event coordination as needed
  • Produces required information for monthly and annual reports
  • Provide instruction and development opportunities for staff through training, coaching and performance evaluations that incorporate student learning outcomes. Specific outcomes include critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, quality customer service, conflict resolution, initiative, communication, innovation, and other transferable skills related to the department work integrated learning program
  • Attend and participate in University, Divisional, and Departmental events, programs, and training
  • Submit marketing requests within established timelines, policies, and procedures
  • While Graduate Assistants have their primary program area, they will also be required to assist with department initiatives and program areas outside of their area of expertise. This includes facility supervision, special events, serving on committees and work teams as well as other duties as assigned.  

Youth Program Specific Duties

  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, development, and evaluation of approximately 40 - 50 student employees including Program Assistants, Summer Camp Directors & Head Counselors, Youth Programs Supervisors & Youth Programs Event Staff, Mountaineer KidZone Supervisors and Mountaineer KidZone Staff

  • Develop, organize, and promote new and on-going youth events and programs 
  • Oversee Youth Programming event operations including communication/correspondence with Parents, handling reservations & invoices, organization/development of activity agendas, set up and take down, and daily event operations 
  • Handle staff payroll and assist in program area budget development 
  • Create & update resource guides, procedural manuals, and other tools for employee reference as needed to ensure they are current 
  • Collaborate across other department program areas to ensure Youth Programming staff maintain current and accurate knowledge of other programs, services, events, and policies 
  • Maintain inventories of craft supplies, materials and equipment, make recommendations for purchases 
  • Conduct Youth Programming area inspections and communicate maintenance, repairs or custodial needs
  • Oversee and develop all Youth Programs including Campus Rec Kids Summer Camp, Kids Night Out, Mountaineer KidZone, Youth Climbing Club, etc.

Craft Center Specific Duties

  • Assist in day-to-day operation including assisting patrons in various crafts including pottery, beadwork, stained glass, tie dye and sewing 
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring and training of student staff to assist with operation of Craft Center and programs 
  • Develop and implement entry level crafting programs aimed as instructional interactive demonstrations for members of the WVU community 
  • Assist with special events and groups to create specific programs to suit a groups diverse needs 
  • Lead a team of student staff to run a series of portable programs to promote the Craft Center on different areas of campus 
  • Assist with inventory management and purchasing of craft materials and equipment 
  • Assist in upkeep and cleanliness of Craft Center equipment and facility 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Admittance into a WVU graduate program
  • Base Level CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Willingness to obtain American Red Cross CPRO certification within reasonable timeframe upon employment start date
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to work with diverse groups
  • Competent knowledge of general computer programs including Excel, Word PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

Prefferred Qualifications

  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience
  • Prior campus recreation experience
  • Previous experience with Recreation Management and related software such as Fusion, Connect2, When to Work etc.
