Job Description

Within the Department of Campus Recreation, Graduate Assistants collaborate with Campus Recreation staff to continue to serve the community as mentioned in our mission statement. Graduate Assistants serve on assigned Campus Recreation and University work teams or committees as needed, including provided evening and weekend operational support and event coordination when necessary. Graduate Assistants produce required information for monthly and annual reports while also submitting marketing requests within established timelines, policies and procedures.

Along with other duties as assigned, Graduate Assistants attend and participate in University, divisional and department events, programs and training. Graduate Assistants provide instruction and development opportunities for staff through training, coaching and performance evaluations that incorporate student learning outcomes. Specific outcomes include critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, quality customer service, conflict resolution, initiative, communication, innovation and other transferable skills related to the department work-integrated learning program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, development, and evaluation of approximately 60 student employees including Program Assistants, Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards and Swim Instructors
  • Coordinate and oversee aquatic special events and instructional programs to include group and private swim lessons, lifeguard training, and other courses as appropriate
  • Maintain records and reports on the day-to-day operation of pool to include daily bather load totals, water chemistry documentation and inventories
  • Handle staff payroll and assist in program area budget development
  • Develop and oversee lifeguard scheduling to include breaks and holidays
  • Develop and facilitate monthly in-service training sessions with program assistance
  • Create resource guides, procedural manuals, and other tools for employee reference
  • Responsible covering lifeguard shifts in emergency situations or getting them covered

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Admittance into a WVU graduate program
  • Successful completion of criminal background check
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor

Preferred Requirements

  • Certified Pool Operator
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • Prior experience with Fusion, Connect2Concepts and When2Work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work with and lead diverse groups
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Prior campus recreation experience
  • Competent knowledge of general computer programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
