Job Description

Within the department of Campus Recreation, lifeguards help ensure the safety of all patrons of our Aquatics facility by preventing and responding to emergencies. For Campus Recreation, lifeguards are the first step to ensuring the Aquatics area operates smoothly.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility
  • Communicates with staff and patrons effectively to ensure aquatic safety and an enjoyable experience
  • Responds well to constructive critique and coaching
  • Acts immediately and appropriately to ensure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Participates in regular in-service training sessions
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times
  • Maintains a high standard of customer service
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate reports
  • Completes additional duties as assigned by supervisor

*Individuals interested in becoming a Campus Recreation Lifeguard MUST have a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification to be considered for employment*

Job Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Ability to pass pre-employment water skills evaluation as stipulated by Campus Recreation
  • Available to work weekends/holidays
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work without supervision
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
