Reigning Champs on Top

For the first time in history, the WVU Club Baseball Team will start the season as the number 1 team in the nation.

For the first time ever, the Mountaineer Baseball Club will be starting their season off on top of the polls. They received a total of 277 points in the preseason poll, only four points above the Air Force Academy. The Mountaineers received a total of 1 first place votes; receiving the third most first place votes in the poll. Out of the fifteen years this team has been an official club, they still continue to reach unmarked territories for the Mountaineer Baseball Club program. The season will start on February 22nd, against the Louisville Cardinals, in an away match. They will look to show why they’re starting the season at number 1, by overpowering the Cardinals with the Mountaineer dominant offensive side.

The offense has been a big reason as to why the Mountaineers have been able to have such success this season. The Mountaineers Club Baseball Team is responsible for finishing 118 runs, and only allowing 52 runs by opposing teams. The Mountaineer runs differential is by a margin of 66 runs; leading the division in scoring margin, and a few other categories. WVU has also been able to distance themselves from the rest of the competition in the standings, with a commanding 6 game

lead over second place IUP, and leading the worst team– Carnegie Mellon– by 9 games. They started this massive lead, by going on a win streak of 8 games; which they will look to extend when they go up against the Cardinals. The Mountaineer Baseball Club has been putting up some historic offensive numbers; which will more than likely be rewarded with potentially a national title or conference title. WVU will look to add 2020 New Penn Regional Champions to their collection, but before this they must go against the top three teams behind the Mountaineers in the conference. They have games against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Cal (PA), Duquesne University, and potential matches with Division 1 schools Michigan State University and University of Louisville. These matches will determine the fate of the how the season will end for the Mountaineers.

Another thing that will determine the fate of the season will be how well the pitchers do against competition. The pitchers had a great fall season, ultimately ending it with a no-hitter being pitched by Tyler Sierzega. The no-hitter was pitched in only five innings because the Mountaineer offense was able to showcase their star power, with mercy rule shortening the game it by four innings. If the Mountaineers are able to produce the same results offensively and defensively, then they’ll be the ones who hoist the NCBA Dii trophy Kansas, at the end of the season.
