The Mountaineers shine in final home matches of the year!
In the final match of the year for WVU’s Women’s Ice Hockey Club, they were able to display magnificent skills on both sides of the puck. The Ladys outshot the competition this weekend by 54 shots this weekend, and only allowed 3 goals for the opposition. The statistics provided show the dominance being put on display by the lady Mountaineers; who ended the year with 6 wins and 7 losses. In the first match between Towson University on the 8th, WVU came out scoring three goals in the first period; all in which were assisted or finished by Samantha Miller. The team then went on to score 4 more goals over the next two periods, winning the first game with a final score of 7 to 2. The next match was played the next day, and was between Towson University again, in a game that was won with a final score of 6 to 1. The Lady Mountaineers we’re able to end the season in front of fans with a well fought victory.
The regular season might have ended, but the club was able to qualify for the postseason with wins; which will be held in Delaware state fairgrounds. The postseason starts February 14th, and goes until February 16th; in a series of matches that will be played between those in the Delaware Valley College Hockey Conference (DVCHC) north/standings. The top three teams will be taken from each division, with the number 1 seeds getting byes for the first day of the tournament. On the first day of games the 2 seeds from the appropriate division will faceoff against 3 seeds from the opposing division. Whomever is victorious will move onto the next round where they’ll face a number 1 seed in the semifinals. After the semifinals, there is the championship match which will be played between the team standing last on both end of the bracket.
West Virginia University Women’s Club Hockey will be taking on the Villanova Wildcats in their first ever postseason. The Mountaineer’s faced the Wildcats earlier in the year, and lost with a final score of 4-0. The first match between the two occurred on November 16th at Villanova’s arena, and was a competitive game until the third period. The Mountaineers have improved tremendously since then, winning 3 out 5 matches played, and currently sit on a three game win streak. WVU will look to do a few things differently in their rematch against the Wildcats, and ultimately change the results of the game this time around. If they are able to do so this time, then they will be playing either Rowan University or Loyola University. If the Mountaineers lose in the first round, then they’ll still be playing the next day, but in a 5th place consolation game!
