Lacrosse makes it’s annual return to club sports WVU Lax, Lax, Club Sports, Sports, Lacrosse

After waiting a season long for lacrosse, the season is finally returning this month; with a big February schedule ahead for both men's and women's clubs. The lacrosse season officially started this past weekend; with the men’s team going to Auburn, Alabama for their first tournament of the year. The women's team will be making its return when participating in the Division I east tournament; which will be held February 22nd and 23rd, at the Pitts Sports Dome. This season is monumental for the men’s and women’s team, with the men’s playing their 50th season, and the women’s club participating in their 15th season. Both clubs plan to go out and show the Mountaineers a better season than their last, and plan to reach unmarked territories for their program.

The men’s lacrosse club team made it’s return first, facing Florida State Seminoles, at Auburn University; who they lost to with a score of 20-5. The Mountaineers then faced the Auburn Tigers Sunday, losing with a score of 20-11. This season marked the start of their 50th season; which has been anticipated all year long, and now finally here! In their previous season, the Mountaineers won 7 games, and lost 6 on the year; finishing third in the division. Their record may not show the best season, but the Mountaineers were exceptional on the defensive end allowing the least amount of finished goals in the division. The men’s club team will look to move past the losses suffered this past weekend, and plan to prepare for the next destination which will be in Dallas. Starting their 15th season as a Club Lacrosse Team will be the Women’s Lacrosse Club, with their season starting February 22nd. The Mountaineers will start their quest at their first tournament of the season; which will include the Pittsburgh Panthers, the Ohio Bobcats, the Buffalos, and the Dukes of Duquesne. The club will start the season off playing Pittsburgh and Buffalo on the 22nd, and will be facing Duquesne and Ohio on the 23rd! Last year in the season opener, the Mountaineers were able to sweep the competition and go undefeated. The Lady’s team will strive to start this spring season with the same results, sweeping competition like they did last year in their opening tourney. Even off the field the Ladys look to sweep the competition in a friendly dance marathon fundraiser held for our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Last year the Mountaineers were able to get into the top ten for fundraiser funding, and look to do the same this year by raising $3,000; they currently have $2,644 of their goal raised. Another goal the Women’s Lacrosse Team has for this season is to finish tournaments with a winning record! They will look to start doing that February 22nd against the Pittsburgh Panthers, to stay updated on the lady mountaineer’s club season follow their social media @wvuwomenslax.
