Avoiding the feeling of loneliness during this stressful time can be a huge task by itself, but reading can help you relieve stress and feel connected with others.
During this unprecedented time, those who are stuck at home can feel confined and lonely. Especially for those who live by themselves, the lack of social interaction can feel devastating. Luckily, a great way to feel connected and zoned out from the stressors of the world is right at your fingertips– and likely laying around your home!
In a study conducted by the University of Sussex, reading can reduce stress up to 68%. The same study shows that reading calms the mind, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and increases creativity! Due to the current situation the world is in, many people feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to navigate these times. Just by reading a book for a few minutes each day, you can help to shave away those stressors and feel more relaxed, while improving your health.
Since many are searching for ways to stay connected to their friends, family and loved ones during this strange circumstance, we’ve become more dependent on technology than before. Video chats and phone calls are great for staying in touch while you can’t physically see those important people in your life, but what happens when the call ends? Social distancing can often lead people to have feelings of loneliness, especially if you’re used to being around people a lot of the time. By taking a few minutes out of your day to read, you’re alleviating those anxieties and connecting with the characters as if they were real. There’s no better feeling than getting into a good book– you know the feeling when you know the characters like they’re your best friends.
